Located on three and a half acres granted by the
King of Spain to the commandant of the Presidio
de San Francisco, the Spanish-style buildings, courtyards,
murals, fountains, gardens and frescoes create an
atmosphere where the artisans work. Proceeds from
restaurant and gift shop benefit Lucile Salter Packard.
The complex is open daily year round except for

Djerassi
Resident Artists Program – Woodside
The Djerassi Resident Artists Program is located
in a spectacular rural setting in the Santa Cruz
Mountains, one hour south of San Francisco. The
Program offers four-week to five-week residencies
from mid-March through mid-November, at no cost,
to artists in the disciplines of visual arts, media
arts/new genres, literature, choreography, and music
composition. Founded in 1979, the program hosts
national and international artists seeking solitude
and inspiration and the property is home to a collection
of dramatic outdoor sculptures.

Filoli
Estate - Woodside
A 43-room mansion and exquisite gardens on 654-acre
estate were once used as the set of the TV series
Dynasty. Named Filoli, to FIght, to LOve, to LIve,
by William Bourne who built the country retreat
that was completed in 1917. The gardens are designed
as a sequence of rooms and feature a collection
of more than 500 varieties of roses. The estate
also features special events, lectures and classes.
Filoli is open Tuesday through Saturday, from
February 11 to October 25, 2003, between the hours
of 10:00 am and 3:30 pm (last admission is at
2:30 pm); closed on Sunday and Monday. Admission
fees are $10 per adult, $5 per student (with valid
ID) and $1 for children ages 7-12. Children under
7 are free. Admission includes self-guided tours,
guided tours, and nature hikes.

Gamble Garden - Palo Alto
Colonial Georgian house built in 1902, set on
a 2.3-acre estate. Bequeathed by Elizabeth F.
Gamble to city of Palo Alto; now a non-profit
community horticultural foundation. The estate
features an historic home, carriage house, teahouse
and several demonstration gardens. Self-guided

Ridge Biological Preserve – Stanford
University
The biological preserve is located near Stanford
University's campus in the eastern foothills of
the Santa Cruz Mountains. An undeveloped jewel set
amidst a rapidly urbanizing area, the Preserve provides
refuge to native plants and animals, rich educational
experiences to students and docent-led visitors,
and a rare natural laboratory for researchers from

Circus Club & Menlo
Horse Show – Menlo Park
The Menlo Circus Club is an exclusive private country
club with stables and a riding ring located within
the town of Atherton. The club’s beautiful
fields are primarily where exciting rounds of polo
are played however, the club also sponsors and is
the site of the annual Menlo Charity Horse Show.
The show is usually in August and features over
600 horses and is the premier hunter/jumper horse
show in the Northern California. Proceeds from the

Linear Accelerator Center – Menlo Park
SLAC is one of the world ’s leading research
laboratories. Established in 1962, it is located
at Stanford University in Menlo Park. Public tours
of the 426-acre particle physics research facility
offer a lay introduction to the workings of the
electron accelerator (atom smasher) and its applications,
from the basic understanding of matter to medical

University Hoover Tower – Stanford University
The tower is one of three buildings that make
up the Hoover Institution, dedicated to the study
of 20th-century war, revolution and peace. The
tower's observation deck offers a sweeping view
of the Mid Peninsula. Tower is closed during the
first week of class, finals, academic breaks and
holidays.

Magazine and Gardens – Menlo Park
Gardens designed by landscape architect Thomas
Church represent distinct western climate zones
and showcase plants for each region -- Central
and Northern California, the Southwest, and the
Northwest. The gardens display many seasonal plants,
as well as a coast live oak called łthe Old
Man.˛ Also part of the garden is the test
garden, where Sunset plants and plans for upcoming
coverage in the magazine, founded in 1898.

(United State Geological Survey) – Menlo
Park
The Visitors Center provides guests of all ages
with an opportunity to learn about natural science
through tours and hands-on experiences. Tours
and activities are geared to the interests and
ages of each group ranging from community groups,
to professional societies, school classes, and
family groups. The center also features a special
earthquake monitoring system where you can see
how the force of an earthquake is measured.

Store -Woodside
Built in 1854 by Dr. R.O. Tripp as a country store,
it also served as a post office and community
center until 1909. The store has been restored
to its appearance in the 1880s and offers hands-on
